Osher Institute Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Osher Members

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Special Interest Groups, or SIGs, are opportunities for learning and engagement outside of the regular classroom. They are a great way to gather with other Osher Institute members who share common interests. All SIGs are member-led and meet regularly to semi-regularly. Registration for SIGs is required.

If you are interested in starting your own SIG, please contact Program Coordinator Jamie Lundergreen at (208) 426-2027 or

Active SIGs:

  • Conversational Spanish
Maintain your Spanish skills by conversing with fellow Osher members, completely in Spanish, for approximately one hour. This SIG will meet every other Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Library! at Bown Crossing. After you register, you will receive an email with details on the next meeting date.
    Facilitator: Roy Schiele
  • Foreign Films at the Flicks
Join Osher members who enjoy foreign films by gathering at The Flicks, Boise’s premier independent movie theater. Following each film, members will have the opportunity to meet in the theater for a half-hour discussion. This SIG will meet January through June, one Monday a month, at approximately 5:00 p.m. An email with the selected film’s title, description, and trailer will be sent in advance.
Please note: Due to robust interest in this SIG and the limited size of the theater, the film may sell out. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
    Facilitator: Patricia Alpine
  • Hiking in the Foothills
Come explore Boise’s wonderful Ridge to Rivers (R2R) trail system on moderately-strenuous hikes of one-and-a-half to two hours in duration. Start from a different trailhead each week to experience the beauty of the open space surrounding our city. Information with details on date, time, and location will be emailed in advance of the planned hike.
    Facilitator: Mike Merz
  • Meditation
Every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m., Osher member and certified meditation teacher, Carolyn Beaver, leads a mantra-based meditation group called satsang, which is defined as “in community with seekers of truth.” Every satsang opens with either teachings from yogic texts, chanting, or japa (out loud mantra repetition). A 20-25 minute meditation period follows, with time for journaling and reflection. The ongoing weekly satsang is open to Osher members as well the general public, so feel free to bring a friend!
Location: River Time Yoga in the Vista Village Shopping Center, 1004 Vista Avenue
    Facilitator: Carolyn Beaver
  • Memoir Writing
Join Osher Institute members who are interested in writing memoirs—historical accounts or biographies written from personal knowledge. We usually met for two hours on the first and third Friday afternoon of each month. After you register, you will receive an email with details on date, time, and location.
    Facilitator: Merilee Marsh

  • Photography
Want to help the Osher Institute photograph our courses and activities for potential use in future slide shows, catalogs, and on our website? If you are knowledgeable about using your camera and are willing to take pictures independently at some of the Osher courses, lectures, and special events throughout the season, this SIG is for you. This does not involve a large time commitment and members can take photos during the offerings they are already enrolled in.
    Facilitator: Terry Christenson
  • Volunteering
Join like-minded Osher members who want to give back to their community by volunteering their time and talents. This group will focus on finding volunteer projects, sharing volunteering experiences, and helping members find meaningful volunteer opportunities. If you have never volunteered before, no need to worry! This group will help you discover what kind of activities best fit you. This group will meet on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. After you register, you will receive an email with details on what volunteer activities will be taking place.
    Facilitator: Gail Kirkpatrick
  • Walking the Greenbelt
Take part in the beauty of the Boise River Greenbelt with other members who want to get exercise while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Moderate to brisk walks that begin and end at the Yanke Building will be the core of this SIG. The group walks for one hour on Monday and Friday mornings.
